Chapter 10

“HENRI?”

“Jaz, how’s it going?” Henri grinned at Jason as he wiped a stray lock of hair from his forehead with a soapy hand.

The kitchen of the Loup-Garou smelled of frying oil, cigarettes, and dish soap. Jason found it somehow reassuring, a reminder that the entire universe hadn’t come to a screeching halt just because Jules hadn’t come home the night before.

“I’m fine,” Jason answered. “Where’s Jules?”

“He canceled today’s practice,” Henri explained as he worked on the dishes. “Said something came up that he had to take care of. Something about his violin. It’s broken, I think.”

“He seemed really upset about something last night,” Jason prodded. “You sure this is about his violin?”

Henri shrugged. “His mother came by here yesterday. Never a good scene when that bi—” He glanced at Jason and corrected himself. “—when that woman stops by.”

That explains it.

“Did Jules say when he’d be back?”

“Nah,” Henri told him. “But with the Milan gig only two days away, we really need to be rehearsing. It’s not like Jules to cancel—I’d expect that more from me or David, if you know what I mean.”

Jason chuckled. “Thanks, Henri.” He patted Henri on the back. “If you see Jules, don’t mention that I was here, okay?”

“No problem, man,” Henri said as Jason walked out of the kitchen.

A broken violin? Strange.

Once outside the club, Jason pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and tapped it a few times. “Juliette? It’s me, Jason Greene. Can I speak with you?”
